Two Excellent Resources for Diabetes Awareness and Good Foot Health
In honor of Diabetes Awareness Month, we’d like to tell you about a source of information you may not be familiar with – especially if you or a loved one has been newly diagnosed with diabetes. It’s the American Diabetes Association.
The ADA is a powerful advocate for diabetes health awareness in society and government, aiming to improve the lives of people with diabetes. In addition, they maintain a website packed with practical information our patients can use every day.
For example, the site offers:
- Basic information everyone should know about diabetes.
- Personal stories others have shared about their journey with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
- Nutrition and meal planning advice.
- A diabetes risk test you can take online with helpful information in both English and Spanish.
- Health care and insulin affordability insight.
- Details about how diabetes affects eye health, sexual health, and heart, kidney, oral, mental, and foot health.
Diabetes and Foot Health
The American Diabetes Association website complements the advice you’ll receive from our team of board-certified podiatrists. Here’s how the ADA and our doctors sum up the effects of diabetes on your feet:
- Poor circulation causes slow healing of wounds, which can quickly lead to dangerous infections and limb loss.
- Nerve damage, called neuropathy, causes insensitivity to heat, cold, and pain. That means it can be difficult to notice you’ve got a foot injury.
- People with diabetes are more likely to develop issues that can cause infections, such as calluses, ingrown toenails, and cracked heels.
Our experienced podiatric surgeons, Dr. Craig B. Frey, Dr. Megan L. Oltmann, Dr. Jim Swienconek, Dr. Rachel Robinson, and Dr. Courtney Yoder, encourage all our patients with diabetes to stay informed about how to prevent diabetic foot complications. Use the ADA website as a resource, and make an appointment with us annually for a diabetic foot checkup – more often if you notice anything amiss.
