Should You Seek Treatment for Flat Feet?
Flatfoot has several names – for example, fallen arches, flat arches, flat feet, and the medical term “pes planus.” All of these terms describe feet with lowered or missing arches. Whereas, most people have distinct curves in the middle of their feet, people whose soles lie flat against the ground when they stand are said to have flat feet.
Despite what you may have learned from this summer’s “Barbie” movie about flat feet (you can watch Barbie freak out here when she discovers her perpetually high-heeled feet are now flat), they’re not always a problem. Many folks – adults and children alike – live with flat feet and don’t experience any pain or existential angst.
However, problems can develop over time and cause pain, fatigue, and difficulty walking or playing sports. That’s when you need our podiatric team to step in.
What causes flat feet?
Genetics has much to do with it; some people inherit their flat feet from their parents or grandparents. Others lose their arch when injured, develop an inflamed or torn tendon, or have arthritis. These can lead to weakness or damage that will eventually collapse the arch.
Our podiatrists can help ease the pain of flat feet.
We can determine the underlying cause of your flat feet and recommend appropriate treatments, which may include:
- Custom orthotics to provide support and correct your gait.
- New footwear that offers better stability and support.
- Exercises to improve flexibility and strengthen muscles.
- Physical therapy to improve overall foot function.
Your treatment will depend on how severe your fallen arches are, the underlying cause, and how much flat feet interfere with your daily activities.
