5 Easy Things to Learn During Foot Health Awareness Month
This coming weekend is not only the start of a new month, but it’s one of the best months of the year from our podiatrists’ point of view. April is Foot Health Awareness Month – a time for us to shout from this virtual rooftop about what our doctors can do for your feet.
We can define foot health in many ways, but in the end, it’s all about feet that serve you well and don’t hurt. Here are five ways to think about keeping your feet healthy:
- More than just about anything, your feet appreciate a great pair of shoes. Many foot problems, such as plantar fasciitis, neuromas, bursitis, and hallux limitus, come about or worsen when you wear ill-fitting shoes or spend too much time in high heels.
- Pampering doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive! After a long day on your feet, give them a break. Simply prop them up, or soak them in a warm water bath with Epsom salts. Clean them daily with soap, dry them thoroughly, and finish with a good moisturizing cream.
- You can prevent some toenail issues by cutting them correctly. Cut your toenails straight across and even with the ends of your toes. Trimming them any shorter invites infection, while cutting them on an angle or curve encourages painful ingrown toenails.
- Feet appreciate it when you keep your weight and blood sugar in a healthy range. When you ask your feet to support excess weight, problems can crop up. Inflammatory issues like plantar fasciitis come to mind, but so do systemic diseases like diabetes that threaten your feet in so many ways.
- Take action when you become aware of foot pain. Make an appointment with our experienced podiatric surgeons, Dr. Craig B. Frey, Dr. Megan L. Oltmann, Dr. Jim Swienconek, Dr. Rachel Robinson, and Dr. Courtney Yoder when rest, pampering, and great shoes aren’t enough. Visit our podiatry office for help with pain, slow healing, numbness, toe deformities, and any other foot issue you might be experiencing.
