Are You Washing Your Feet Right? Don’t Find Out the Hard Way!

We wash our hands multiple times a day, but how often do we really think about washing our feet? A recent BBC article explored this very question, highlighting the debate around foot hygiene. And since April marks Foot Health Awareness Month, the team at Foot and Ankle Associates of Cleveland figured we’d do our own deep dive on the question.

Why Wash? When? How Often?

One of the best features of the BBC article is that it also touches on the potential downsides of over-washing, which can strip the skin of its natural oils. However, it doesn’t go deeply into the kinds of problems washing prevents. Fungal infections, for example, can be prevented through proper rinsing of the feet.

It’s Not Just About Cleanliness

While cultural norms vary, from a podiatric perspective, daily foot washing is generally recommended. After all, your feet must deal with:

  • Sweat: Our feet have a high concentration of sweat glands. Wearing tight shoes, boots, or the wrong kind of socks can exacerbate this.
  • Bacteria: When you wear shoes all day, sweat and bacteria accumulate, creating an environment ripe for odor and potential infections (like athlete’s foot).
  • Exposure to the Elements: Even with shoes, our feet are exposed to dirt, dust, and other contaminants.

Daily washing also provides an opportunity to inspect your feet for any cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or changes in nail appearance, crucial for those managing the complications of diabetes.

5 Steps Toward Washing Well

  1. Daily Washing: Wash your feet at least once a day with soap and warm (not hot!) water. You can use Epsom salt or other soaks, but don’t overdo it: that might lead to dryness or irritation.
  2. Between the Toes: Pay special attention to the spaces between your toes, where moisture and bacteria tend to accumulate.
  3. Thorough Drying: Dry your feet completely, especially between the toes, after washing. This region is prone to excessive moisture and subsequent infection.
  4. Moisturize (Strategically): Apply a moisturizing lotion to your feet, but avoid putting it between your toes! As we stated above, that area doesn’t need extra moisture.
  5. Clean Socks: Wear clean socks every day, and choose breathable materials like cotton or moisture-wicking synthetics.

Stay Fresh!

While cultural practices may differ, podiatrists agree: daily foot washing is always a good idea. Just avoid overwashing and keep those toes dry!
