5 Tips for Summer Feet that Look and Feel Great
- Start with an overhaul. Your feet have been locked up in boots and had hot air blown on them all winter. We’d be surprised if they’re not a bit dry and callused. Freshen them up with a pedicure at home or at a reputable salon.
- Develop a healthy relationship with your flip-flops. Do wear them to protect your feet from fungal infections on wet pool decks. However, don’t live in them all summer. Flip-flops are better than going barefoot, but you can’t rely on them to offer much cushioning or support. Rotate your flip-flops with heftier sandals or shoes.
- Apply sunscreen to your feet. The tops of your feet and toes need UV protection, so lather them up along with the rest of your exposed skin.
- Be prepared for anything. When you’re out on the town or at the beach, be ready for foot first aid if you need it. Consider putting together a travel pack for foot emergencies and include bandages, antibiotic ointment, blister pads, nail clippers and files, and a pumice stone. Pack an extra pair of shoes in your car and, while you’re at it, throw in some clean, dry socks in case yours get wet.
Get prompt attention for injuries. As we often advise our patients, it’s not a good idea to ignore a foot injury or try to live with the pain. It’s usually easier to fix most foot and ankle injuries when they first happen. Our experienced podiatric surgeons, Dr. Craig B. Frey, Dr. Megan L.
