Professional sports are always fraught with injured players. Many of those injuries are to the feet and ankles. Here’s a sampling of some recent foot and ankle sports injuries that a podiatrist can treat:

During spring training with the Detroit Tigers, rookie Riley Greene fouled a ball off his foot and fractured a bone (April 1, 2022).
“Fractured” and “broken” mean the same thing. However, foot and ankle bones can break in very different ways. There might be a small crack in the bone with no separation. Or, the bone might break into several pieces, perhaps even piercing the skin. Regardless of the severity of a foot or ankle fracture, a podiatrist will assess the type of break, provide a boot or cast to immobilize the area, or perform surgery. Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, current head coach of the Jackson State football team, injured his foot and subsequently had two toes amputated (March 8, 2022).
According to news reports, Sanders had blood clots in his lower limb that complicated his foot injury. A podiatrist can treat such a complicated injury.
