See a Podiatrist for Sports Injuries of the Feet and Ankles
Professional sports are always fraught with injured players. Many of those injuries are to the feet and ankles. Here’s a sampling of some recent foot and ankle sports injuries that a podiatrist can treat:
- During spring training with the Detroit Tigers, rookie Riley Greene fouled a ball off his foot and fractured a bone (April 1, 2022).
“Fractured” and “broken” mean the same thing. However, foot and ankle bones can break in very different ways. There might be a small crack in the bone with no separation. Or, the bone might break into several pieces, perhaps even piercing the skin. Regardless of the severity of a foot or ankle fracture, a podiatrist will assess the type of break, provide a boot or cast to immobilize the area, or perform surgery. We treat fractures in children as well as adults! - Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, current head coach of the Jackson State football team, injured his foot and subsequently had two toes amputated (March 8, 2022).
According to news reports, Sanders had blood clots in his lower limb that complicated his foot injury. A podiatrist can treat such a complicated injury. Many people don’t realize that podiatrists are trained in all aspects of the lower limbs, including vascular disorders like blood clots and peripheral arterial disease, or PAD. - Steph Curry of basketball’s Golden State Warriors sprained a ligament in his left foot (March 16, 2022).
Podiatrists are experts at treating all types of foot and ankle sprains and strains. Like fractures, some sprains are more serious than others. A simple sprain, where one or more ligaments stretch a little too far, may heal in a week or two. Curry’s injury appears to have been a more severe sprain, as it’s kept him out of the game for a month now.
