In many ways, social distancing has changed how we eat. We’re off-schedule, routines out of whack. We don’t go to the grocery store as often. We’re at home, reaching for food that’s convenient, not necessarily maintaining a balanced diet. But of course, ask just about anybody, and they’ll tell you that a diet rich in a variety of foods is best for our bodies, from our head to our toes, inside and out. Skin looks and feels better when we eat well. Our digestive system works more smoothly. Our bones, joints, tendons, and muscles remain strong and supple.

A few years ago, the Public Library of Science (PLOS) published a study that rated foods on a scale of most to least nutritious. The study put aside culture (what your family background has taught you to eat), taste preferences, and affordability of foods. It simply focused on the “nutritional fitness” of foods. Which foods pack the most nutritional punch?

According to this study, the #1 food turns out to be almonds! Almonds score high due to their richness in monounsaturated fatty acids. Only one other nut placed in the top 100 nutritionally-fit foods: walnuts (#46). Not surprisingly, foods in the top 100 come from a variety of food groups:

  • tangerines, apricots, and cherimoya fruit
  • ocean perch, flatfish, and snapper
  • chia and pumpkin seeds
  • swiss chard, beet greens, green peas, and red cabbage

Dr. Craig B. Frey and Dr. Megan L. Oltmann encourage our patients to do what the study confirms: as often as possible, choose foods from a variety of food groups. Doing so gives you the best chance of getting the potassium, folate, vitamins, calcium, fat, carbohydrate, protein, and all the other essential nutrients your body craves.
