Flat Feet: Everything You Need to Know
Flatfoot is a condition where the foot lacks a normal arch. Instead of the midfoot having a slight rise, the entire foot rests on the ground.
How to test for flat feet
If you’re wondering if you have flat feet, you can perform this simple at-home test: dip your foot in some water, then step on some dark tile, construction paper, or any other surface that will show your footprint. If your midfoot is arched, it won’t touch the paper and your imprint will show a curve. If you can see your whole foot or most of your foot, you’ve got flat feet.
Arches have a purpose
Babies are almost always born with no arches. Midfoot arches develop over the first few years of life. Their purpose is to help the feet carry a human’s full weight. Foot arches act like shock-absorbing springs. They help us keep our balance when we stand and walk.
Do your flat feet need fixing?
The answer is “maybe.” Many people with flat feet go through life perfectly pain-free. However, the older you are and the longer you’ve had flat feet, the more likely it is that you’ll develop problems such as:
- pain
- swelling
- plantar fasciitis – also called heel pain
You’re also at an increased risk for flatfoot complications if you have diabetes, obesity, arthritis, or have sustained a foot injury.
So, even if your flat feet have never given you a problem before, be watchful for any changes. Our experienced podiatric surgeons, Dr. Craig B. Frey, Dr. Megan L. Oltmann, and Dr. Jim Swienconek, are experts at assessing flat feet and determining the best course of treatment.
