Recently, the Centers for Disease Control expanded its list of underlying health conditions that put people at an increased risk of severe complications from COVID-19. The list now includes those who suffer from the following health conditions:

  • coronary artery disease
  • COPD
  • obesity
  • chronic kidney disease
  • high blood pressure
  • moderate to severe asthma
  • liver disease
  • pregnancy
  • smoking
  • type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes and COVID-19

Type 2 diabetes is of special interest to us at Foot & Ankle Associates of Cleveland. Our expert podiatrists, Dr. Megan L. Oltmann and Dr. Craig B. Frey, have many years of experience taking care of the diabetic foot. Our patients with diabetes know we constantly stress the importance of annual foot exams, quitting smoking, and keeping blood sugar levels under control through diet, exercise, and medications. Now, we have one more thing to stress: be extra vigilant about avoiding COVID-19.

If you need more convincing, consider these shocking statistics from a French study: diabetics with existing complications to the eyes, nerves, kidneys, heart, legs, or feet are at a much higher risk of death from COVID. In fact, 10% of diabetes patients with COVID will die within one week of entering the hospital.

Take action to stay safe

If you have diabetes, follow the standard guidelines for avoiding a coronavirus infection: wash your hands frequently, maintain a 6-foot distance from others, stay away from crowds, avoid all cruise travel and non-essential air travel, and wear a mask when you go out. Protect yourself further by continuing your diabetes medications as prescribed and calling your doctor immediately if you feel ill.

If you’ve got an underlying condition such as diabetes, please don’t take extra risks. Our service area of Portage, Geauga, Summit, and Cuyahoga Counties – indeed, the entire state of Ohio – must remain vigilant.
