6 Ways Men Can Take Better Care of Their Feet

At Foot & Ankle Associates of Cleveland, we’re putting the focus on men in June – it’s Men’s Health Month! So there’s no better time to encourage men to take better care of their feet.

Here are six great ways to accomplish this:

  1. Get a pedicure. Guys, you may not have been aching for Ohio nail salons to open up like some of your female counterparts. But now that re-opening of nail salons has happened, think about taking advantage. New sanitation and mask-wearing protocols have made it safer than ever to get a professional pedicure. A pedicure cleanses your toes of deep-seated dirt, softens thick calluses, trims your toenails to smooth perfection, moisturizes your skin, and just generally makes your feet feel refreshed. Skip the nail polish if that’s not your thing.
  2. Manage your sweat. Give your shoes some air by letting them dry out in between wearings. Keep sweat away from your skin by wearing moisture-wicking socks. Change your socks often. If foot odor and sweaty feet are a problem for you, see our podiatrists.
  3. Keep your A1C in check. If you have diabetes, control your blood sugar levels with healthy eating and get plenty of exercise. Uncontrolled diabetes leads to dangerous foot problems.
  4. Say goodbye to extra weight. It might surprise you to learn that many foot problems can be attributed to the stress put on them by overweight and obesity. Losing weight if you need to can save you from the pain of plantar fasciitis, flat feet, arch problems, arthritis, and tendonitis.
  5. Stop smoking. Nicotine and other chemicals in cigarettes damage nerves, narrow blood vessels, and dry out the skin of your feet.
  6. Commit to regular foot self-exams. Respect your feet by examining them regularly for signs of problems such as unexplained swelling, signs of skin cancer, tingling sensations, changes in size or shape, and constant pain. These are all reasons to make an appointment with our expert podiatrists, Dr. Megan L. Oltmann and Dr. Craig B. Frey. We welcome the men of Cuyahoga, Summit, Portage, and Geauga Counties to our office in Solon, Ohio. Call (440) 903-1041 or contact us online.
