5 Sports that are Easy on Your Feet

Ever taken a close look at a runner’s foot? The ends of the toes have calluses on them from constant slamming against sneakers. Blisters torment the toes as well, and when they break, the skin peels off in chunks. Toenails frequently turn black and fall off from all the trauma. Runners’ feet are not a pretty sight!

Other sports are really hard on your feet as well – tennis and other racquet sports like squash and racquetball leave players prone to injuries like ankle sprains and stress fractures. Baseball players suffer from contusions, football players endure turf toe, serious dancers tear foot ligaments and tendons all the time, and the list goes on and on.

Unfortunately, as athletes get older, they become more prone to sports injuries. Years of wear-and-tear and weight gain lead to common foot ailments like arthritis, heel pain, shin splints, and fallen arches. But does that mean that you have to resign yourself to sitting around just to avoid injury? No way – there are plenty of activities that aren’t so hard on your lower limbs:

  2. Rowing machines provide an excellent cardio and lower body workout.
  3. Kayaking is great for toning your arms and core.
  4. Low-impact aerobic or cardio class uses your feet but eliminates the jarring effects of jumping.
  5. Tai-chi combines strength, balance, and flexibility with a calming, meditative component.

All of these activities have the added benefit of being easy on other parts of your body as well – your hips, back, and knees may also thank you for making the switch.
